Q: Tell us how you first became involved with the NCL?

A: I first got involved with the NCL during my sophomore year of college. My introduction to the competition was through a class requirement where I was tasked with participating in the full season of NCL events, including the Practice Game, Individual Game, and Team Games, and documenting my journey. Looking back, I'm grateful that this was a class requirement because, at the time, I was quite intimidated by cyber competitions. However, this experience not only helped me overcome my initial apprehension but also sparked my passion for cybersecurity challenges.

Q: What do you wish other people knew about the NCL?

A: I wish more people knew about the welcoming and judgment-free community that the NCL offers. It's an opportunity to learn and grow alongside individuals who may be experiencing the same challenges as you or who have valuable past experiences to share. Whether you're seeking mentorship, guidance, or simply a supportive network, the NCL Community is there to help you along your cyber journey. Embracing this community can provide valuable hands-on experience and accelerate your growth in the field.

Q: What is your favorite cybersecurity resource, blog, or website?

A: My favorite cybersecurity resource is the "Cybersecurity Headlines" podcast by the CISO series. I find it to be an excellent resource for both beginners and experts as it provides daily headline news in the world of cyber events and threats, along with concise summaries. This podcast helps me stay updated on the latest developments in cybersecurity without overwhelming me with excessive information.

Additionally, I also enjoy platforms like Hack The Box (HTB) and TryHackMe. While they might seem cliché, I find their hands-on modules to be extremely valuable for practical learning. In particular, I'm looking forward to starting TryHackMe's new AWS security training module soon. These platforms provide interactive and engaging experiences that enhance my understanding of cybersecurity concepts.

Q: What might someone be surprised to know about you?

A: Someone might be surprised to know that I used to be a huge superhero nerd. My two favorite superheroes are Batman from DC and Spider-Man from Marvel. I admire them not only because they are the top heroes in their respective universes but also because they represent polar opposites of each other. The dynamic between them is what keeps me fascinated and engaged with their stories. Hopefully I can go back to Comic-Con this year!

Q: What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?

A: If I weren't pursuing my current career path, I believe I would explore opportunities in the entertainment industry, perhaps as a comedian or as a resource for providing advice and counseling to others. Additionally, I have a strong passion for dogs and dream of owning my own dog training or housing facility in the future. This venture would not only fulfill my love for dogs but also provide a valuable service to help people ensure the safety and well-being of themselves and their furry companions.

Q: What is your motto or personal mantra?

A: One of my developed mottos, particularly as I entered the Cyber Security Industry, is "Control the controllables." This mantra encapsulates the idea of taking accountability for aspects within my direct influence. It guides me in allocating my study time effectively, managing my reactions to negative comments or setbacks, and persevering despite any perceived shortcomings. It empowers me to focus on what I can change and to proactively take charge of my journey in making a name for myself in the field.
